Fashion Trends 2026: What I'm Actually Wearing

The pieces that earned a permanent spot in my closet this year — and the trends I'd skip.

September 5, 2026 · 10 min read

okay, fashion trends in 2026 are doing something interesting — they're not really trends. which is itself the trend. people are tired of "the new thing." they're buying one good jacket and wearing it for three years. they're finding their color and sticking with it. the mood is: get dressed, look like yourself, leave the house.

that said, a few specific things are landing in everyone's closet right now — including mine. here's the honest version of what's worth buying, what's not, and how to make the whole thing feel less like a costume.

The bomber jacket is still having its moment

yes, still. the oversized bomber — particularly in chocolate brown or olive — has been quietly replacing the blazer for two years now. i have two: one brown suede, one olive green, and i wear one of them almost every day from september through may.

what's new for 2026 is the proportion. the 2024 bomber was slightly oversized. the 2026 bomber is bigger — dropped shoulder, longer sleeve, the kind of shape that looks like it came from a vintage military store. you wear it with everything: a t-shirt and jeans, a slip dress, wide-leg pants. it's the only jacket you need.

the price points are wild. you can get a really good one for under twenty dollars, and the ones i own cost less than my weekly grocery bill. i'll link the exact two below — they look quadruple the price.

Wide-leg everything

the skinny jean is officially dead in 2026. not "you can't wear them" dead — they're just not the default anymore. wide-leg pants, wide-leg jeans, barrel-leg jeans, the looser the better. the silhouette is roomy, fluid, doesn't cling.

what works: a wide-leg trouser in a deep neutral (espresso, charcoal, ink) with a tucked-in t-shirt or a fitted top. the proportions are the thing — the volume is on the bottom, so the top should be more fitted. if you do big top + big bottom, you look like a tent.

the unexpected one: barrel-leg jeans. they look weird on the hanger and incredible on. slightly cropped, slightly tapered at the ankle. takes a minute to get used to and then you won't wear anything else.

Earth tones are the new black

every "what to wear" piece this year is earth-toned. chocolate brown, olive green, rust, terracotta, butter, moss, oat. black is still in there, but it's no longer the safe default — earth tones are.

the appeal is that earth tones are warmer. they photograph better (less harsh on skin), they layer better (everything in your closet matches), and they feel like the mood of right now — a little warmer, a little softer.

if you want to start: get one piece in chocolate brown (a sweater, a trouser, a bomber). then one in olive. you'll see — suddenly everything in your closet matches.

Mixing textures

the quiet trick of 2026 fits: pairing textures instead of colors. linen with leather. Wool with silk. Cotton with cashmere. Denim with satin. the texture contrast does the visual work, so the colors can all be in the same family.

an example i keep coming back to: a white linen t-shirt tucked into dark jeans, with a leather bomber on top. three textures, all neutral colors. it looks more interesting than a fully-colored outfit.

the rule: when in doubt, add texture. when you're bored of an outfit, swap one piece for a different texture in the same color. the outfit suddenly looks new.

Statement jewelry with simple outfits

the easiest 2026 fit is also the cheapest: a plain outfit plus one piece of jewelry that does the work. plain white t-shirt, jeans, sneakers — and then a chunky earring. or a wooden cuff. or a marbled resin necklace. the rest of the outfit is the canvas.

this is why the jewelry trends matter — they exist exactly so you can wear simple clothes and have the jewelry do the work. if you're bored of your basics, buy a piece of jewelry, not a new shirt.

Sneakers, loafers, and the death of the heel

for the third year in a row, the heel is on its way out. the 2026 shoe is: a clean white sneaker, a chunky loafer, a ballet flat, or a simple leather slip-on. all flat. all day.

the new thing for 2026 is the loafer — specifically a chunky, lug-sole loafer in espresso brown leather. it looks like you tried without trying. it goes with everything. it's comfortable. it is, in my opinion, the single best shoe purchase of the year.

What's out

  • logomania. logo bags, logo belts, logo anything. the loud-logo era is officially on pause.
  • skinny jeans as the default. you can still wear them, but they're not the move.
  • high heels as everyday shoes. the runway and the street have fully separated.
  • fast fashion micro-trends. the era of "this specific sweater is in this week" is over.

How to wear 2026 without looking like you tried

the easiest formula: one oversized piece + one fitted piece + one piece of jewelry. the oversized piece can be the bomber, the wide-leg pants, the chunky loafer. the fitted piece is the t-shirt tucked in, the simple top. the jewelry is the chunky earring or the pendant.

that's it. that's the formula. every outfit you put together for the next six months can be that. earth tones, texture contrast, one statement piece, one quiet piece.

the other thing — and this is the real secret of dressing well in 2026 — fit matters more than trend. an old, perfectly-fitting t-shirt beats a new "in" sweater that doesn't fit right. try things on. keep the ones that fit like they were made for you. trends come and go, fit is forever.

and the most important thing: it should feel like you. don't wear the loafer because it's "in" if you feel like yourself in sneakers. don't wear the brown bomber if you feel like yourself in a navy peacoat. the trends are a starting point. the finish line is whatever makes you walk out the door feeling like yourself.

the best outfit is the one you forgot you were wearing because you felt like yourself.

happy getting dressed. see you in the next one.
